Define your fundraising goals and purpose

When you raise funds to help us confront lung cancer, you’re telling your family, friends, and community that lung cancer matters to you. But what do you want them to know and do?

Before you create your fundraising page, it’s helpful to define your goals. For example:

Why are you raising money for lung cancer?

Why did you choose this particular fundraiser?

How long will your fundraiser last (1 month, 2 months, 6 months)?

How much money do you want to raise?

Who should you ask to support your cause?

Your target audience is typically anyone interested in supporting the causes you are passionate about—in this case, lung cancer. This may include family and friends, colleagues, neighbors, and your broader in- person and online communities. (See telling your story and creating a marketing strategy for more information on target audiences.) The more you can define your fundraising goals and purpose upfront, the more you are setting your fundraiser up for success.

Choosing the right type of fundraiser

Choosing the right type of fundraiser will depend on both your objectives and how much time you can devote to your fundraising endeavor. Celebrations and tributes, for example, require less investment of your time than creating your own fundraising event.

Before you select your fundraiser, think about what YOU want to do. If you want to design your own fundraising event, who’s your audience? Is it family, friends, friends of friends, and/or someone else? Do you want to hold an in-person event, a virtual event, or some hybrid of the two? There are no right or wrong answers—but how you think about selecting a type of fundraiser will help set you up for success.

Create a tribute page in honor of a loved one to help us raise community awareness and confront lung cancer together. Whether you’re collecting donations as part of a celebration of life event, dedicating a special day in memory of your loved one, leaving a legacy, or fundraising in support of a cure, your participation makes a difference.

Once your tribute page is created, you can invite others to view the page, add personalmemories and words of support, share the page on social media, and email the link to friends and family to donate.

Telling your story

Telling your lung cancer story can be a powerful way to forge an emotional connection with your audience and encourage them to donate to your fundraiser. Tell them how lung cancer has impacted your life and/or the lives of a loved one. Think about what facts and figures about lung cancer will resonate with your audience. Being honest and authentic is also a great way to make people support your cause and donate much-needed resources to confront lung cancer.

As you think about telling your story, it’s also important to explain how the funds will be used—and that every dollar they donate to GO2 via your fundraiser will have an impact on the lives of people experiencing lung cancer and loved ones. Indeed, every dollar donated helps to provide vital support in our relentless quest for a cure, including funding lung cancer research, government advocacy, and support services.

Create a marketing strategy

Once you have your lung cancer fundraiser established, it’s time to develop a marketing strategy for success. This should include:

  • A timeline for your campaign
  • Promotional materials (typically emails and social media)
  • Campaign wrap-up notes to donors

Having a campaign timeline is important so people know when your event is being held and their deadline for supporting your fundraising efforts. Make sure your deadline is clear in all your promotional materials, from emails to individual donors telling your story to any posts on Facebook or other social media channels asking for support. Your marketing strategy should include a personal email or note thanking your donors for their support. And if you’re fundraising around another activity with a longer timeline, consider sending new fundraising emails with updates about your progress at defined intervals of time.

Utilize your network for support

In addition to your personal marketing efforts, many lung cancer fundraisers find it helpful—and rewarding—to ask their in-person and online networks for support. Engaging your family, friends, and community in raising awareness about and/or attendance for your fundraiser can be a valuable way to amplify your message that we can confront lung cancer together. Also, consider asking local businesses and community organizations for support. Even if they are unable to contribute financially, many are willing to help you spread the word and encourage others to share and support your campaign.
